What are Porcelain Veneers?

As we get older, unfortunately our teeth become darker and change their shape. Patient’s often ask me what can we do to freshen their smiles up and initially we talk about whitening but when it comes to changing the shape and colour of teeth, the least invasive technique are Porcelain Veneers, so “ What are Porcelain Veneers?”

Simply put Porcelain Veneers are very thin (1-2 mm) panes of porcelain which are cemented onto the front or visible side of teeth to mask colour , change shape or even close spaces between teeth.

The initial process is a consultation between myself and the patient where we discuss what it is exactly their hoping to achieve and what options available for them. Once a consensus happens and they understand the pro’s and cons then typically impressions are taken for study models.

The study models are made by our in –house Dental Laboratory partner  “Aceram” and allow us to see what the teeth look like now but also to show our patient’s what we think they will look like when the work is finished, together with other diagnostic information like x-Rays they allow our patients to actively contribute to their own Dental Work and prepare them for the process required.

An appointment is scheduled where a minimum of preparation occurs on the teeth and a very accurate impression is taken for delivery to “Aceram” but also very importantly the patient leaves with a set of Temporary Veneers in the exact shape they had already seen on the study models.

During the time it takes to produce the veneers (about 2 weeks) they can let us know if they would like something changed with shape so hopefully there are no surprises when it comes to the fitting appointment

At this appointment the Temporary Veneers are removed and the finished highly accurate Porcelain Panes are tried for fit colour and look, if everyone’s happy then they are cemented in with a matching acrylic resin cement (girls think of false fingernails!).Excess Cement is removed and margins are highly polished for best effect.

The  veneers allow for small subtle changes to be made and I tell all our patients the best reward I can get is if  a relative, friend or colleague comments “Something about you is different but I don’t know what it is ?”
