Even though the last hundred or so years have seen profound improvements and advancements in the medical and dental fields, many people still lose their teeth quite early in life. Missing teeth make it difficult to chew and can create feelings of self-consciousness about the appearance of your smile.
Tooth loss typically happens because a person has gingivitis, tooth decay or injury. In the past, dentures and bridges were the only treatment that could be offered to regain a full number of teeth. Thankfully, due to modern dental technology, dentists can now offer dental implants as a better treatment option.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are used to replace a missing tooth or teeth. They closely mimic natural teeth and consist of an implant rod and customised dental crown. Made of titanium metal, implants are known for their longevity and durability.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants integrate with the jawbone and become stable through a process called osseointegration. This provides stability and inhibits bone loss that often occurs with tooth loss. Dr Karikios designs each implant restoration to match surrounding teeth so that the results look natural.
The Procedure for Dental Implants
Titanium fixtures are surgically screwed into a person’s jawbone during this procedure. This implant serves as an anchor for a set of false teeth, or a single tooth, that is designed to look perfectly natural.
For a Successful Procedure
Dr Karikios will first examine a patient to ensure that he or she has enough bone in the area of the absent teeth to enable the dental implant to be properly connected.
After diagnosis, if the patient is found to be a suitable candidate, they can have the implant installed.
The implant often lasts for the rest of a person's life, with the crown on top of the implant lasting about 15 to 20 years.

Dr Chris Karikios has many years of experience in the dental field, treating hundreds of patients in the Sydney area. He provides exceptional work that can make people feel far more confident about their smile.
While the health of his patients is his utmost concern, Dr Chris Karikios also understands that if someone feels self-conscious about their teeth, they may avoid smiling, which hides the warm side of their personality and may give off the wrong impression.
